Nigerians have continued to pour out their reactions over the press release of the University of Benin, in reaction to the murder and rape of one of her students, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.
UNIBEN who made the press release on the 31st of May, 2020, has continued to receive criticisms from the public over the content of the press release.
The University commiserated with the victim’s family and condemned the wicked act as one that shouldn’t be condoned in any society.
“The Vice Chancellor then used the opportunity to call on students of the institution and indeed all young people to be wary of the company they keep and the places that they visit…” This statement by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Lilian Salami, generated a lot of public criticism as the public believes the VC blames the victim for keeping bad friends and going to the wrong place to read.
A Twitter handler, @Aproko-Doctor said in his tweet that “the official statement from UNIBEN is a collective disgrace to the educational system in Nigeria. You still found a way to still blame the victim stylishly by implying she did not keep the right company? Or was in the wrong place?”
Another Twitter handler, @ Chef-Kachi condemns the varsity Vice Chancellor’s statement. According to him, “women have always been constantly blamed for perpetrating their own rape. They always find a way to blame her because what is that statement from Uniben and to think that the VC is a woman, that’s all she had to say? She fucking went to a church to read, she wasn’t at a motel.”
“While we’re at it, can we call for the resignation of the UNIBEN VC? Because I don’t get what the fuck that statement was,” another Twitter handler reacted.
