Covid-19: 413 commuters arrested for violating interstate travel ban in Kano

In the face of the continuous lockdown order, the Kano State Police Command on Thursday says it has arrested not fewer than 413 commuters for violating the interstate movement restriction order at the Kano border.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Habu Sani disclosed the arrest while addressing a press briefing at the Bompai Police Headquarters on Thursday.

CP Sani decried how the persons and commuters resort to following unconventional routes such as feeder roads and cattle tracks to bypass the checkpoints.

According to him, “the command after mapping the State, strategic deployments of both human and material assets of the Command were made to Thirty Four (34) strategic points/areas across Seventeen (17) frontline Local Government Areas that bordered Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa and Bauchi States to checkmate and enforce the interstate movement restriction order.

“Despite these developments, some commuters bypassed the checkpoints and follow unconventional routes including feeder roads and cattle tracks. Strategies were reviewed and the Command’s various Community Policing Committees were adequately utilized to support the operations. 

“These led to the breakthrough of the series of arrests in the last one week which include 74 vehicle drivers, 45 tricyclists, 50 cyclists and 120 persons trekking into the state all at Kano/Kaduna border.

“Similarly, a total of 64 persons were arrested at Kano/Katsina borders which include 14 Vehicle drivers, 8 tricyclists, 12 motor cyclists, and 30 trekkers while a total of 30 violators were also intercepted at Jigawa/Kano border and additional 30 at Bauchi/ Kano bringing the total number to 413.

“All the violators recently arrested are and shall be prosecuted by the Mobile Court constituted by the state government to ensure that those who disobey the lockdown orders do not go scout free to also also serve as deterrent to others,” CP Sani however said.

DPH NEWS Recall that the command about a week ago, arrested about 197 suspects for various offences while recovery of ammunition among others were made.
