The President of Zero Tolerance Club of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, Comrade Ramatu Suraj on Talk To DPH News called for arrest and prosecution of persons who harass or discriminate against the feminine gender.
In her words she said; “Gender based violence is corruption, and as I have outlined in some parts of my manifesto before inauguration, we would fight against gender based violences like sexual harassments, sex for grade and any other related issues”.
On why her club which is to fight financial corruption will delve into other crimes in the society, she said; “ZTC is an anti corruption initiative on campus. The club is there to fight all sort of corrupt acts on campus such as embezzlement of money, sexual harassment, gender based violence, promoting the culture of integrity and unity among the university community and other related crimes”.
When asked if she came in office to fight for the feminine gender, she said;
“My emergence as the president of the club is something I have never dreamed of, I emerged after passing a keen interview alongside other colleagues whom were all men. After the interview I scored more points than all. Also, the panelists who interviewed us knew about my capacity and integrity as I have worked with most of them as a member of ZTC for years”.
On how her club planned to take legal action against culprits she said;
“Arraigning criminals is something EFCC, police and ICPC have been doing for decades and we are looking forward to partnering with them on how to bring it to campus. I’ll advise victims not to get scared and report these kinds of abuses”.
She ended by imploring the University community to shun all acts of gender violence, domestic crimes and to tolerate one another despite differences in culture and beliefs;
“I want to urge the entire university community most especially the students to shun all acts of violence, corruption, mismanagement of public funds, promote culture of unity and transparency, tolerate one another despite our religious, cultural and social differences. This will help us to move our institutions forward and Nigeria in general. I want to also urge them to feel free and report any act of sexual harassment to the club, ZTC in collaboration with Anti Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) will do everything possible to fight for their rights. I also want to specifically, implore my fellow female students to feel free and report all harassments, this will help us to achieve our sole goal of fighting corruption on campus”.
