Akpabio Wins Appeal As Court Orders Rerun In LG

By Bashir Turawa

The Court of Appeal sitting in Calabar has on Saturday ordered a rerun in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State where Senator Godswill Akpabio lost to Senator Christopher Ekpenyong in the February 23, 2019 senatorial election in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District.

Akpabio, who is currently the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the last election had gone to the Court of Appeal to challenge the decision of the election petition tribunal declaring the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ekpenyong, winner of the Senatorial Seat.

The court therefore ordered a rerun in Essien Udim Local Government within 90 days.

Celebrating his victory, Akpabio, on his verified Twitter handle, thanked God and the people of his senatorial district for their supports.

“Today’s Appeal Court Judgement is a victory for Democracy. Let me say that, I am grateful to God and my people for always standing by me.
I will never take your support for granted.”
